Looking to know the advatages and disadvantages of online learnings? Well this post has got your back.

Around 74% of students in the USA want to opt for online learning following the pandemic. While the numbers look significantly high, the disadvantages of online learning are equally high.

In some aspects, online learning seems superior to traditional learning because of its accessibility and ease of learning. It provides a fantastic way for people to learn in the comfort of their own place and at their own pace.

As someone who opts for online education a lot for my convenience, I have come across a lot of areas where I thought it fell behind traditional education.

In this article, I will talk specifically about the disadvantages of online classes. By the end, you will be able to decide whether the disadvantages outweigh the perks!

Disadvantages of Online Learning: In a Nutshell

Previously, I covered the benefits of distance learning, where I shared how it has helped me in different ways. However, the downside of online education can’t be neglected either. So, here are the quick disadvantages of online education!

  • Limited Teacher to Student Feedback
  • Risk of Social Isolation
  • Cheating is more brutal to monitor
  • E-learning is inaccessible to digitally illiterate people
  • Issues with Accreditation and Quality Assurance
  • Requires self-motivation and efficient time management skills
  • The Practical Component of learning suffers
  • Limited to specific disciplines only
  • Lack of development of communication skills
  • Prolonged screen exposure
  • Health Issues
  • Limited access to the resources
  • Online classes often lead to boredom
  • Less cultural exposure
  • Less Credibility

I have also covered a separate article on how online learning affects students that will help you see the good and bad sides of online education!

Now, let us dive deeper into the downside of online learning!

1. Limited Teacher-to-Student Feedback

One of the main features of traditional learning is the instant feedback teachers give to their students. In a conventional classroom environment, this feedback can come quickly, whereas with e-learning, this possibility is limited.

Students can come to their teacher with their problems and can get them resolved instantly during the lecture or the dedicated hours. Personalized feedback is essential for students as it positively impacts them. It also makes the learning process richer and boosts the morale of the students.

However, the conventional feedback method does not work in this setting. There are student assessments in online learning where some level of feedback can be provided, but it’s not as personal. This lack of personalized feedback can demotivate the students.

I like getting constant feedback, whether it is related to my work or education. Feedback helps me understand my areas of improvement, and being unable to get proper feedback is a major disadvantage of online learning for me.

2. Risk of Social Isolation

One of the critical points of e-learning is that you can learn in the comfort of your home, but the lack of social interaction can lead to problems. For many people, school is their primary source of social interaction. In e-learning, educators and students spend most of their time online, which inevitably leads to social isolation. Social isolation, along with a lack of physical interaction, may lead to several mental health problems like increased stress levels and anxiety.

Tip: As an online student, I understand the stress it can bring. However, you can ease your anxiety and stress levels with my stress management tips for online students.

3. Cheating is Garder to Monitor

One of the biggest disadvantages of online learning is proper monitoring for cheating during assessments. E-learning creates various opportunities for students to cheat. The students take assessments in their environment while using their devices. The educators only have access to the live camera feed, making detecting cheating difficult. Students have devised intricate cheating schemes and even let a third party take their exams.

4. E-learning is Inaccessible to Digitally Illiterate People

One can argue that today, almost everyone has a mobile device, a laptop, or both. So, e-learning is accessible to all of those as long as they have some degree of understanding of technology. However, there’s still a vast population of people who either don’t have access to these devices or don’t know how to navigate the internet. Until there is this gap, e-learning will remain inaccessible to everyone. So, it’s essential to look at e-learning as an addition to traditional learning rather than a replacement.

5. Issues with Accreditation and Quality Assurance

E-learning is still a comparatively new addition to education. Various e-learning platforms have no accreditation, and a third party unchecks the quality of education.

Lack of proper accreditation and quality check of material cripple the legitimacy of e-learning.

For E-learning to stand shoulder to shoulder with traditional learning, we must ensure that all online learning platforms are qualified and have proper accreditation.

To ensure I don’t end up wasting my time and money, I go through the course details thoroughly. I also check reviews of students who have opted for the course, and once I have checked what the course offers, duration, instructor, and other details, I decide to opt for it.

6. Requires Self-motivation and Efficient Time Management Skills

E-learning gives you the freedom to learn at your own pace. You get the flexibility to choose when to learn the materials. While this benefits the most, it comes with the cost of motivating yourself.

In a conventional classroom, you have to follow a set curriculum and have a schedule that you need to follow. You also have other students around you to put you in the right mindset. According to our time management statistics, 87% of college students claim that practicing time management skills helps them do better. When you are learning by yourself, it can be challenging to manage your time efficiently and ensure that you meet deadlines.

This is a disadvantage of e-learning that I personally can’t pass through. I end up procrastinating on my courses, especially when I take a self-paced course. Sometimes, it can be challenging to complete it at the right time.

7. The Practical Component of Learning Suffers

E-learning platforms take a more theory-based approach and focus mainly on theoretical knowledge rather than practical abilities. The reason for this boils down to the fact that it is simply easier to implement theoretical lectures than practical ones in an online learning platform. Due to this, fields where more practice is required lag behind in e-learning.

8. Limited to Certain Disciplines Only

This point is related to what we have discussed above. Every discipline of education cannot be effectively taught in e-learning. At least in the current scenario, e-learning is more appropriate for fields that focus on theoretical knowledge rather than fields like medical science, which ask for a more practical approach. While things may differ in the future, we cannot wholly teach all fields through e-learning.

9. Lack of Development of Communication Skills

E-learning is a very effective learning mode, but it still lacks in some areas. Students attain theoretical knowledge at their convenience, but often, their communication skills are neglected. This happens mainly due to a lack of face-to-face communication between students and teachers. Lack of development of communication skills would lead to students having theoretical knowledge but not knowing how to impart this knowledge to others effectively.

As an introvert, I thought it would eliminate my interaction with other people. However, I noticed my communication skills were impacted, too. I tackle the problem by working on my communication skills separately (another hard work, yay!)

10. Prolonged Screen Exposure

E-learning inevitably leads to prolonged exposure to the screen. Prolonged screen exposure is not only harmful to kids but is not recommended for adults. It may affect mental development in kids. In adults, too much exposure can lead to weakened eyesight and migraines.

11. Health Issues

Constantly sitting in front of your screen can result in various health-related issues. It can put a strain on your eyes and also result in severe back problems. Many students can experience back pain and health problems when they constantly sit in front of their screens for too long.

Furthermore, if you are someone with glasses already, excessive screen time can lead to your power fluctuating and weakening your eyesight. Besides physical health issues, students can also develop mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, etc.

This is usually because when you are learning online, you tend to stay in isolation, which then triggers negative thoughts or may lead to your brain being unable to focus on your studies. Remember, your physical and mental health are interconnected, and problems with one can also cause the other to increase.

I prefer taking breaks of 15 minutes every 2 hours. Rather than sitting in one position for too long, I prefer to take short breaks every two hours and move my body. This ensures I don’t end up sitting in the wrong posture for too long or make me feel tired.

12. Limited access to the Resources

Most courses require a blend of practical and theoretical learning. For instance, if you are opting for science courses, you will require practice besides just theoretical learning. One of the biggest cons of learning is that there is a lack of practical sessions. You won’t be able to experiment in laboratories, special equipment, etc.

While you will ace your exams with theoretical studies, implementing the knowledge you gained without practical knowledge can put you behind people who are getting better practical knowledge.

13. Online classes often lead to boredom

Another disadvantage of online learning is the increase of boredom in students. Online classes won’t have a one-on-one session where students and teachers can interact, making it boring for students. Additionally, students cannot interact with other students during their class or ask their queries directly to the instructor, which also leads to losing interest in the subject they are choosing.

For me, I really didn’t like how it can get too boring sometimes. It makes me feel tired and lose interest quickly, especially when the course is less interactive. To tackle this problem, I chose to opt for courses that offer exciting videos with quizzes, assignments, etc. to keep my interests alive.

14. Less Cultural Exposure

One of the things you can do for students is engage them with different cultures that can broaden their perspective toward the world. When you are within a different culture, you educate yourself about the same and also expand your thoughts.

During online classes, students are unaware of the different cultures, which can also lead to a stagnant perspective. On the other hand, traditional education celebrates and educates students about different cultures, allowing them to expand their thinking.

15. Less Credibility

While many online courses are excellent choices to enhance your resume and make your career strong, many employees ____

Employers and educational institutions may not recognize the certifications you have completed through online courses. Therefore, it is crucial to analyze the course you are doing and check if the certifications they are offering are recognized worldwide. If you are going to spend your time and money on your online education, make sure it is worth it.

Tip: I have a list of free courses with certifications that will help you in exile in your career, and also have recognized certifications.

Final Verdict: Knows The Disadvantages of Online Learning

E-learning still has a long way to go to act as a replacement for traditional learning. While it has some significant advantages, there are plenty of notable disadvantages, like a lack of practical elements and issues related to accreditation and cheating. While some of these disadvantages can be removed in the future, some might never get resolved.

While I prefer taking courses online, I have come across multiple disadvantages of online classes. Personally, for me, the disadvantages of online learning don’t overshadow the perks it brings.

However, it can be different for you. While I have explained online education disadvantages, I have also explained the way I tackle them.

Ultimately, you can give it a try and decide if online education is an advantage or disadvantage for you!
