Steph Curry’s MasterClass Lessons Explained (My Experience)

As mentioned earlier, Steph teaches basketball differently and is impressively effective in learning the game in the right direction. I mean, who wouldn’t want to look at some dope techniques while also learning the technique simultaneously?

Well, I had a great time learning from Steph Curry. Let me quickly skim you through the highlighted takeaways from his MasterClass and review the lessons in-depth.

Are you ready to hop in? Let’s go.

1. Getting started with Steph Curry

Steph Curry gives a brief introduction and gradually dives into the core subject of the course, where he shares the common mistakes he has made in basketball over the years and suggests ways you could avoid them easily with practical techniques.

Getting Started With Stephen Curry
"Success is not an accident, success is actually a choice."

You can also get to know about Steph Curry’s inspiring transformation and growth.

2. Practicing Shooting Forms

It is evident that shooting is an essential form of learning basketball; hence, Steph initiates the lessons in various ways you can shoot with his performance.

Practicing Shooting Forms
"Basketball isn’t just a sport. It is an art, one that must be mastered to succeed."

He also recommends ideas through which you can perform shooting, followed by some unique techniques for practice, which is helpful.

You are also taught the mechanics of shooting from the basics, with some transitions to follow along while practicing.

In Lesson 2, Steph performs all the techniques that he suggests to show a visual of how effective it can turn out to be in real life.

Catches are quite common in the game of basketball, but he demonstrates how you can turn that into a wonderful opportunity to make a shoot out of it.

NOTE: There is also a volunteer coordinating with him throughout the course.

3. How to Handle a Basketball

In Lesson 5, he starts talking about the foundations of handling a basketball and how impactful it is to become a ball-handler.

He also says that a good ball-handler is a great shooter, which is true. Along with ball-handling, Curry takes over the topic of dribbling and explains it in detail.

How To Handle A Basketball
"Being a superstar means you’ve reached your potential, and I don’t think I’ve reached my potential as a basketball player and as a leader yet."

There were some incredible demonstrations of ball-handling techniques, dribbling, and transitions while playing, which were pretty insightful.

Some footwork and movements are also recommended, which were great tips.

He ends the lesson with some practice exercises to get going with the techniques.

4. Playing with a Team

Steph talks about playing with other players in Lesson 9, an intense yet intriguing class comprising all the right coordination components.

He differentiates practicing solo and playing with a team, which was a great example because while playing with others, we tend to learn along with them.

Playing With A Team
"Be the best version of yourself in anything you do. You don’t have to live anybody else’s story."

A breakdown of the role of a defender is shared with clear instructions, and some gaming terms are used, which was entirely foreign to me.

He emphasizes that all the lessons should be considered and practiced physically at least once to get the gist of his teaching accurately.

5. Ball: On-screen and off-screen

There are a few things in understanding basketball, and Steph explains them well in detail.

Ball -Off Screen And On Screen
"I’d rather be a non-All-Star playing in the Western Conference finals than an All-Star who’s sitting at home in May."

He talks about strategies to score better at the ball screens, which are some exclusive content coming directly from an NBA player.

Curry also demonstrates how to efficiently execute the perfect ball screen, which was a bit of practical advice on learning ball screens.

Ever wondered about losing to a defender yet scoring once the ball hits your hands?

Well, in Lesson 14, Steph teaches how to do it with fade, pop, and curl techniques.

6. Mental preparation

Although a sport is all about getting on the field and playing till you sweat out, being mentally prepared is also part of sportsmanship, and Steph explains how to be prepared, which is a great guide to know before going technical about the game.

Mental Preparation
"I do a little sign on the court every time I make a shot or a good pass and i pound my chest and point to the sky – it symbolizes that I have a heart for God. It’s something that my mom and I came up with in college and I do it every time i step on the floor as a reminder of who I’m playing for."

In Lessons 16 and 17, you are provided with countless pieces of information about how to be passionate about the game and impact being a player in a team.

He also talks about the importance of being confident in your skin and your techniques because if not, you will miserably fail, which was motivating.

What did I like about Steph Curry’s MasterClass?

While taking Steph Curry’s MasterClass, I loved a few things about his course entirely, and I thought I’d list them down quickly so that you’ll get an idea of his MasterClass.

Effective Workbook 📖

Though workbooks only overlook the course and give basic information about all the topics discussed, the workbook provided with Steph Curry was completely different.

The workbook had every detail, from having a strict practice routine to a clear visual representation of rim shots performed by Steph Curry, which is great.

It also had some effective tips, tricks, and techniques to follow and practice.

Structured Format 📝

The best part about Steph Curry’s MasterClass was the format he used to teach in his course, which was simple yet significant in understanding various aspects.

I mean, the breakdown of the exceptional techniques followed by a trial performance by him was surprisingly unique because, in other courses, instructors don’t perform.

Be it the theory teaching, practical lesson, or knowledgeable advice, everything in his MasterClass is neatly delivered in a structured format, making learning easy.

Detailed Instruction 🏀

Steph knows his way of teaching a course in a clear-cut manner with no errors attached. Like, there was not a single lesson that I’d say was not explained well.

The teaching was top-notch, and he made sure to simplify concepts as efficiently as possible so that the general audience could understand them better than the pros.

Also, I noticed that every time Steph makes a game-related statement, he has a practical aspect of backing it up; hence there is no fooling of content bluntly.

What do I feel can be improved in Steph Curry’s MasterClass?

Although I like a few things about Steph Curry’s MasterClass, you should consider a few downsides before taking the course right away. They are:

Dedicated only to beginners

As I took the course, I realized that a few concepts discussed were too basic and could be considered the fundamentals of basketball gaming only.

Although I would not say that you can learn the same from a YouTube video by a random instructor, it was favorable to all beginners.

Some techniques can be helpful to intermediary or advanced-level players, but overall, it was constrained to beginner-level understanding for easy observation.

Less coverage on other technicalities

Steph made sure to cover all the aspects as much as possible but missed some crucial points, and it was evident. I learned a lot, like ball onscreen, ball-handling, dribbling, and many more, but I felt he overlapped a few concepts.

He might have missed it because the entire course was structured to be beneficial to beginners, which could be the reason.

Who is best-suited for Steph Curry’s MasterClass?

Steph Curry’s MasterClass was effective and impactful in learning basketball principles like ball handling, shooting, and dribbling.  I’d recommend Steph Curry’s MasterClass based on the learning that I obtained from the course.

  • Any beginner who would like to learn the basic principles of basketball
  • Basketball admirers who want to take a course to understand techniques
  • Professional basketball players who want to learn from Steph Curry directly

Although the entire course favors beginners, experienced and professional players can learn a few creative techniques from Steph Curry, which is helpful.

What You’ll Need With This Course?

A few things you will need to learn along with this course, and those things are very minimal. But these are the things that will help you learn and apply Steph Curry’s teachings in real life. These things are:

  • One Tennis Ball
  • Two Basketballs
  • Performing the tricks on a basketball court
  • An opponent

If you’re an aspiring basketball player, then you will have access to these things pretty easily; if you don’t, then you still can perform plenty of tricks with just the basketball and ground.

Steph Curry’s MasterClass Pricing Explained

Like many other Masterclass courses, accessing Steph Curry will require a subscription to the platform. You can’t purchase the course separately. Instead, it will be included with a MasterClass subscription.

You can also check detailed MasterClass pricing to get a glimpse of what each plan offers.

AccountDevicePrice (Bill Annually)
IndividualOneOne$10/ Month
DuoOneTwo$15/ Month
FamilyOneSix$20/ Month

Apart from these three subscription plans, Masterclass also offers an At Work Plan, which needs a minimum of 5 seats. In my opinion, the family plan is much more convenient.

You can still access this plan even if you’re not living under the same roof.

For instance, if you and your five friends need to access this plan, you can split the $240/ Year, which makes $40 each yearly. In fact, if you divide in even more, then that makes the monthly price for each member – $3.33.

How Original is Steph Curry’s Course?

Despite most of the information available on this course being easily accessible on YouTube, the structure of the course is more sturdy. For instance, as of now, there is rarely a full-blown Basketball course out there.

So, that raises the authorization of one curated by a legit Basketball superstar.

Now, if you consider the basketball techniques, surely, they are not original. However, the way Steph taught the course is surely different, and you won’t find it anywhere.

But then again, it’s less familiar to regions where Basketball is not too popular. For schools where Basketball is thoroughly taught, the techniques and training provided by Steph Curry are a no-brainer.

Steph Curry Masterclass: Three Alternatives

Now that I have walked you through the Steph Curry Masterclass let’s check out some of its alternatives in the list below:-

1. The Skills

The Skill is best for gaining expert knowledge from sports legends/ coaches.

This platform is especially dedicated to all sports-related knowledge. So even if you don’t want to learn Basketball, you can opt for another game. Currently, the platform is popularising Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Phelp, Shaun White, and so on.

2. Udemy

There is a Basketball course on the platform, which is specially curated for Beginners.

The 4.5-starred course has over 300 students. Now, if you’re curious about the offered curriculum, that is almost similar to Steph Curry’s.

Despite Udemy being cheaper than Masterclass, the credentials of the instructor teaching Basketball over there are not as solid as those of Stef’s. Therefore, it automatically gives Stef’s masterclass the upper hand. You can also check out our working Udemy coupon code and get discounts on your purchase.

Besides, you can keep an eye on our Udemy Black Friday page to grab maximum discounts once the sale is live!

3. YouTube

YouTube is undoubtedly the best place to check out free content. In fact, if you’re looking for some Basketball tutorials, you bet you will find it on the video streaming platform.

However, being a beginner can surely throw you off, considering the amount of content you will find on YouTube. Naturally, you lack research, so it’s difficult to pick up good-quality video.

In contrast, Masterclass gives you a well-curated content. So you don’t have to spend extra minutes figuring out which lesson you should begin with. Masterclass got it figured out. All you need to do is pay the money and relax.

Final Verdict: Steph Curry MasterClass Review (2024)

Learn Basketball Tricks With Steph Curry

Moreso because there are hardly any Basketball courses out there. Yes, there is free YouTube content, but there is only so much that you can extract from the freely provided site.
