This applies to both the Coalition and the Common Application. You are now free to apply to as many private and public institutions as you choose!

So coming back to when you should apply to college, I would suggest it is always better to start completing the general application requirements before August 1st.

Many educational institutions employ proprietary software, which means they have their own unique programs that are not accessible through a platform like the Common or Coalition application.

Mid-August or September is usually when these colleges launch their application process. Schools use various dates.

The elements of school-specific applications are typically very similar from school to school. However, some elements, such as the essay questions, may vary.

There are a few fundamental items you must provide regardless of when or where you apply to colleges.

These could consist of standardized test results, recommendation letters, official school transcripts, and college essays.

Now that we’ve discussed when applications open let’s move on to when they close.

1. Early Decision Deadlines

Application Deadline: Early to mid-November.

Admission Decision: Mid-December

Early Decision (ED) is a college admissions process that allows students to apply to a college early and receive an admission decision before the regular admission deadline. 

By applying early, students can demonstrate their strong commitment to a particular school, and if admitted, they are expected to enroll.

The deadline for submitting Early Decision applications is usually in November, which is earlier than the regular admission deadline, usually in January.

If you ask me, Early Decision is a binding agreement, meaning that if a student is admitted, they are required to enroll and withdraw all other college applications. 

Therefore, students should only apply Early Decision to their top-choice school and make sure they are fully committed to attending if admitted.

Additionally, some colleges have different deadlines for Early Decision I and Early Decision II. Early Decision I deadlines are typically in November, while Early Decision II deadlines are typically in January. 

This allows students to apply early to their top-choice school but still have the flexibility to consider other options if they are not admitted.

Early Decision is a great option for students who have a clear first choice for college and are willing to make a binding commitment to enroll if admitted.

2. Early Action

Application Deadline: Early to mid-November

Admission Decision: Mid- December.
